Nico's Monaco Blog: Wednesday

The Monaco Grand Prix is unique, both on and off the racetrack. The circuit is a fantastic challenge for the drivers because there’s no room for error and the atmosphere is very special. The boats in the harbour, the proximity of the grandstands and the noise of the cars add up to a great sporting spectacle.
I’ve lived in Monaco all my life. I used to commute to school through the tunnel and I now live in Fontvieille, which means I can get to the F1 paddock by scooter every morning in just a couple of minutes. It’s the first of two home races for me this year, the other being the German Grand Prix, and I have lots of family and friends coming to watch. I’ll be hoping to put on a good show!
The build-up to this weekend’s race began on Tuesday, when I drove a powerboat with the BBC and RTL on board. It was beautiful weather and we had a good time, even though Jenson – in another boat – almost crashed into us at one point!
On Tuesday evening I played in the traditional Nazionale Piloti versus Prince Albert football match in the Stade Louis II. Seven of the current drivers turned up (me, Giancarlo Fisichella, Fernando Alonso, Sebastian Vettel, Felipe Massa, Jarno Trulli and Sebastien Bourdais) and I played for the first 40 minutes. It was great fun and the final score was irrelevant as it was all for charity.
It’s now time to focus on the opening day of practice, when it will be important to maximise track time in both sessions. Grip levels vary the whole time at this place, as more rubber is put down on the racing line, and you’ve got to increase your pace steadily. There’s no point being a hero on one lap, if you end up in the barrier on the next!
