Silverstone is a demanding racetrack because it’s really quick. We don’t touch the brakes for the first half of the lap, so you need a lot of confidence in the car to be quick through Copse and Becketts – both of which we enter in seventh gear.
I feel ready for the challenge, however, because I had a good test at the track last week. I completed 70 laps on Thursday, during which we found a good balance on the car, and I’m looking forward to the race weekend. We also have several aerodynamic upgrades on the car, which I hope will make us more competitive than we were in Magny-Cours.
One of the nice things about the British Grand Prix is not having to get on a plane for once! After last week’s Silverstone test, I drove back home to Oxford; I then drove to the Williams summer party at the factory on Saturday night – where I made myself dizzy on the helter-skelter! – and then I drove up to the track this morning. Lots of driving and no flying, which has got to be good.
One person who’s had to get on a plane to be here is my father, Satoru. He’s coming to the race to work with Fuji TV, but I guess he’s used to jetlag from his years in Formula One! I’m looking forward to seeing you, Dad.
