Off the Beaten Track Canada

07 June 07

Formula One will visit 17 different countries this season across five continents. From Melbourne to Malaysia, Silverstone to Shanghai, Fuji to France, Barcelona to Brazil...that's not only a lot air miles, but plenty of new cultural experiences just waiting to entice you. So, if you're planning a trip to any of the Grand Prix this year and can tear yourself away from the race track for just a moment, why not experience the best local culture has to offer? Whether you want to know where to lay your hands on the cheapest drink in Monaco or where to find the nearest Kangaroo enclosure in Melbourne or the best curry house in Silverstone, we have the inside track so let us be your guide in our new feature 'Off the Beaten Track.' If you have your own suggestions, please feel free to email them to us at insidetrack@williamsf1.comand we will include the best submissions in all future entries! CANADA If you have some holes to fill in your itinerary this weekend, wander down to Peel Street between de Maisonneuve Blvd and Saint Catherine Street between 5.30pm and midnight and feast your eyes on Ferraris, Lamborghinis and Porsches, both vintage and new. There is a carnival atmosphere downtown over the GP weekend as the whole city seems to pulse with F1 fever. Crescent, the street which runs between Sherbrooke and Rene-Levesque, should also be on your hit list and will be where all your fellow fans (and most probably team members as well!) will be hanging out in the evenings. Away from the F1 revellers, if you fancy spending some of your well-earned cash, head to the Casino de Montreal. A 24/7 extravaganza of gambling, food and drink, the casino was built inside the pavilions of France and Quebec from Expo '67 and promises hours of fun. Just make sure you take plenty of cash! For a more 'cultural' experience, the lookout on top of Mount Royal is an excellent destination for an urban walk. Located in Mount Royal Park, (designed by Frederick Law Olmsted, best known for landscaping New York's Central Park) the beautifully appointed terrace looks out over downtown Montreal, with a view to the river and beyond to the Monteregian Hills. If you have anymore time to burn, Montreal's Olympic Stadium (built for the 1976 Olympics) is another must-see as one of the city's most intriguing examples of modern architecture. For the ladies, there are some great shops in Montreal courtesy of the Underground City but, if there's just one thing you put on your shopping list, make sure it's some organic maple syrup from Canadian Maple Delights on the Rue Saint-Paul Est to drizzle over your pancakes when you get home. But be warned, pack it well - you don't want it leaking all over your luggage!
