Turkish GP Qualifying
Posted on Saturday 29 May 2010
Turkish delight was in limited supply for the team at Istanbul Park today as both AT&T Williams drivers were eliminated from qualifying in Q2. On a difficult circuit for the FW32, Rubens Barrichello and Nico Hulkenberg recorded the 15th and 17th times of the session and will line up on the eighth and ninth rows of the grid respectively for tomorrow’s race.
Rubens Barrichello:
In a way, we did well to achieve a good balance on the car for qualifying, but we are suffering with our top speeds here. The track doesn’t suit the car as much as Monaco did so we are struggling a little bit more than normal. We are far away from where we want to be, but Williams are fighters. We need to keep that spirit up and keep pushing to get to where we want to be.
Nico Hulkenberg:
It was tough going today. On my second run in Q2, I picked up some oversteer at the exit of turn 7 which put me off line and unfortunately cost me my lap. We are pushing really hard at the moment and trying to squeeze all we can out of the car but we still have plenty of work to do. A lot can happen in the race so I’ll be giving it everything I can.
Sam Michael, Technical Director:
Today’s result is clearly not where we want to be. We're going through the data to look for the main differences to our competitors, but the obvious target is to bring more performance to the car for the forthcoming races. The track engineers will now concentrate on getting a good start tomorrow with a view to getting into the points.

Ladies see that it is impossible to be done anything in relation to the car, because with this engine Cosworth IMPIDOSO all chances of a good result!
Rubens good luck!
well done in quali lads, especially RUBENS. 15th isn't the worst place to start from, if you get a start like MONACO. That was great. It will be hard to get any points though, driving a bucket of muck like that. Think the engine needs to go in the dump & the Aero guys need a kick in the A..! Still, maybe some of the other teams will mess up. Ha The WILLIAMS era of F1 domination is at an end. Lucky to be able to stay ahead of LOTUS at this stage. Sorry to be so blunt but its hard to watch a team work sooo hard & get nowhere.
GOOD LUCK TO YOU ALL FOR THE RACE.
come'on guys? What's wrong? Renault made updates for every races.. Mercedes did a new car to Schumacher, Ferrari Contact fia to Update hes engines.. and Williams did what? if the team want's back to the top.. they need find solutions for the car! If the engine are not competitive, contact fia.. everyone knows.. the team got the better driver on the world, they are the better on the grid for make setups and make the car better!
Good Luck Rubens! Tamojuntosempre#
really disappointed with this result, too far away from where we expected, i totally agree with Rubens that the main problem is not the balance, having little to do with the aero parts, the only one who should be responsible for this terrible performance is our DEAR ENGINE SUPPLIER-----COSWORTH!!!! C'mon, i don't wanna see Williams using this engne anymore~
GOOD LUCK guys, try to get some points tomorrow, though it's really not easy~Keep fighting!
FW32 is the worst car in FW serious! I cannot understand what happened from last year to this year. Fw31 was so strong, but why Fw32 is so unbelieveable bad. I hope tomorrow we have good luck for both drivers.
Gotta get a better engine to bolt to the FW chassis, plain n simple.
Simply disappointing...... I don´t know what has to be done to get back at the fron fighting for podiums..... it´s so sad......
Things to doo
1º Get Mercedes or Renault Engine (If you dont have a good engine. you cant make the car good..)
Hi again.
Maybe I was wrong. If Cosworth Engine is the problem, lets stop work at the Aerodynamic and the mechanical balance.
If Engine power decrease after the first 100 km of use, so the problem can be:
1 - A classic problem of gap between piston and cylinder diameters. It can be the piston aluminum alloy or something with the cylinder material or machining ( grinding ) process.
2 - Some times the oil or the oil pressure is the problem. Can Williams ask to Cosworth to run in Dyno the Engine with other lubricants, or other oil pressure?
3 - Talking about cylinder pressure, we need to measure the cylinder pressure during the race or the first 100 km because the valve seats can expand more than the design value and will leak, or loose pressure.
4 - Can Cosworth check the piston rings?
5 - Eletronic problem? I don´t think so. 100%
6 - Valve train? Pneumatic valve springs material fatigue? Can be...
7 - Lets measure the pneumatic pressure at the valves. I think the pressure ( so the flow sewage - liter/minute ) goes down after first 100 km of use because the heat is so high at the air holes and nozzels that block the flow and than the valves can´t open and close right at high RPM range. Can Cosworth measure the pressure or the valvetrain efficiency?
8 - Just a question: Is the engine who loose performance after first use or the gearbox and the power train have some bearing problem, or gear dimensional problem? Can we check the gearbox and power train at the power loose moment?
Come on!! Williams have a track simulator at Factory? Can we put the car at the ground dyno and measure these things above?
Race strategy ( for Me ): Start with the hard tires. Just drive constant but fast ( don´t burning the breaks and tires ) . I think 2 stops with hard tires, and the last 15 laps with soft tires and light car can be very good.
I make a bet: 5 cars will crash or need to pit after the first lap. We are at 17... Lets try something ...
Rubens, to contigo e não abro... ( I´m with You and I don´t give up )

Again, very disappointed.
Sam Maichel, our car is very bad again. Other Team are better and we worse.
The William Team can´t hard work and has this result.
Go Go Rubens...(I have certainly that you go to do what be will possible.)
shame were so low down the grid but a good start and a few points would be fantastic!
good luck guy's were all 100% behind you!!
one word: catastrophe!!! .....with last year pointing have williams after 6 race 1 point!!! ...and we are soon last in field (without 3 new teams) .... i´m very disapointed ......let´s go boys, wake up!!!
Sam Michael told both drivers could use their cars with "old" parts because problems with Hulk in Monaco. I hope Williams team are really doing this, both cars are not strong enough in Istanbul.
We will support the team, principally Rubens, as we always do, but we also beg to Williams to do something to improve the FW32.
Go Rubens!
P.S.: We are still waiting Rubens's t-shirt (with his name in it) in the Formula1 Store.
